The experience

The greatest wildlife show on earth

The Great Migration never stops. The herds move in a loop around the Serengeti ecosystem, following the rains and fresh grass, with predators close behind.

There is no single “migration season” — each part of the year has its own highlight. Tell us when you can travel and we’ll place you in the right part of the Serengeti, in your own private 4×4 with your guide.

The migration, month by month

  1. Dec – MarSouthern Serengeti & Ndutu

Calving season: thousands of calves are born on the short-grass plains, drawing lions, cheetahs and hyenas.

  2. Apr – MayCentral Serengeti

The long rains. The herds start moving north and west; the park is green and very quiet.

  3. Jun – JulWestern Corridor

The herds gather near the Grumeti River for the first crossings.

  4. Jul – OctNorthern Serengeti

The famous Mara River crossings — the most dramatic, and most popular, time to go.

  5. NovHeading south again

The short rains begin and the herds stream back towards the southern plains.

Good to know

When is the best time to see the migration?

It depends on what you want to see: the calving season in the south from December to March, or the river crossings in the north from July to October.

Can you guarantee a river crossing?

No one can — the herds decide when to cross. Our guides know where to wait, and staying more nights in the north gives you the best chance.

Can we fly in to save time?

Yes. We have fly-in migration safaris from Arusha or Zanzibar straight to the Serengeti airstrips.

Is it a private safari?

Yes. You have your own guide and 4x4, so you can stay with a sighting as long as you like.
