Overview

Mount Meru (3 days)

Mount Meru is an active volcano 70 kilometres west of Kilimanjaro and the centrepiece of Arusha National Park. At 4,566 metres it is Africa’s fifth-highest mountain — and, for its height, a challenging climb because of its steep, rocky slopes.

Its forests are home to monkeys and nearly 400 bird species, and buffalo, warthogs and giraffes graze on the open grassland of the lower slopes.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1Arusha → Momella Gate → Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m)

Drive to Momella Gate at around 8:00 am and complete the formalities. With your mountain guide, porters and cook, climb through open grassland — with buffalo and warthogs — and forest full of birds and colobus monkeys to Miriakamba Hut. (Lunch, dinner)

  2. Day 2Miriakamba Hut → Saddle Hut (3,570 m)

Cross the steepest section of the climb through lush forest to Elephant Ridge, with views of the summit ridge and crater floor. Lunch at Saddle Hut; optional afternoon climb of Little Meru (3,830 m). (Breakfast, lunch, dinner)

  3. Day 3Summit → Saddle Hut → Momella Gate → Arusha

Leave at around 2:30 am with your guide and ranger to reach Cobra Point (4,350 m) at sunrise — crater cliffs, the Ash Cone and Kilimanjaro floating above the clouds. Descend via Saddle and Miriakamba huts to Momella Gate and drive back to Arusha. (Breakfast)

Good to know

How fit do I need to be?

No technical skills are needed, but good fitness helps. Regular hiking or cardio training in the months before your trip makes a real difference.

When is the best time?

January to early March and June to October. We avoid April and November, the main rainy seasons.

Can I add a safari?

Yes — a climb combines perfectly with a safari before or after, or a few days on Zanzibar.
