Overview

Marangu Route

Marangu is one of the most popular routes to the summit of Kilimanjaro — partly because it can be climbed in five days, and partly because you sleep in mountain huts along the entire route instead of tents.

An extra acclimatisation day can be added at Horombo Hut, which greatly improves your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.

Day-by-day itinerary

After breakfast at your hotel, drive to Marangu Gate. Complete the climb formalities and registration, then start the climb with your mountain guides, porters and cook up to Mandara Hut for meals and overnight.

  4. Day 4Summit: Uhuru Peak → Horombo Hut

Leave at around 1:00 am for the final climb, reaching Uhuru Peak at around 6:30 am. After photos, descend to Kibo Hut for breakfast, then continue down to Horombo Hut for meals and overnight.

Good to know

How fit do I need to be?

No technical skills are needed, but good fitness helps. Regular hiking or cardio training in the months before your trip makes a real difference.

When is the best time?

January to early March and June to October. We avoid April and November, the main rainy seasons.

Can I add a safari?

Yes — a climb combines perfectly with a safari before or after, or a few days on Zanzibar.
