Endless plains

About Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is one of the world’s great wildlife reserves and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its name comes from the Maasai word for “endless plains” — and standing among them, you understand why.

Over a million wildebeest and zebra move through the Serengeti ecosystem in a year-round loop, followed by lions, cheetahs and hyenas. Away from the herds, the park holds some of Africa’s densest big-cat populations and more than 500 bird species.
